Music Industry Evolution and Challenges

Speaker 1

Ah yes , welcome back to the MT Alternative Podcast , the show where we boldly go where no brain cell has dared to venture . Today , mike and Tom will be gracing your ears with their completely unsolicited and undeniably underqualified take on the music industry . Yep , the same industry that brought you the timeless classics like Auto-Tune , tiktok , fame and songs that sound suspiciously like every other song out there . But don't worry , they'll also be touching on whatever random thoughts their tiny brains can muster in between . It's going to be deep , it's going to be insightful and by the end of it you'll probably question why you even started listening in the first place . So sit back , relax or don't we really don't care and let's dive into the wild world of music biz with all the expertise of someone who once saw a guitar . Let's get this train wreck rolling .

Speaker 2

Well , well , here we are again .

Speaker 3

Here we go .

Speaker 2

Yep .

Speaker 3

I'm enjoying this .

Speaker 2

A little too much baby .

Speaker 3

Well , I don't know if you can enjoy it too much . That's what I told Graham at work .

Speaker 2

Graham Cracker .

Speaker 3

I don't know if that's what his real name is , but he is a cracker , but anyway , oh goodness . Speaking of names , I have a little thing I learned this week .

Speaker 2

What's that ?

Speaker 3

Did you know that Bob the Builder and Jack the Ripper both had the same middle name ? Why , why me I learn stuff .

Speaker 2

Is this what I sat back here for ? Dad jokes .

Speaker 3

That wasn't a bad joke .

Speaker 2

I said a dad joke .

Speaker 3

Oh , a dad joke .

Speaker 2

A dad joke .

Speaker 3

No , that wasn't a dad joke .

Speaker 2

That was just the truth .

Speaker 3

Anywho , continue the football game Dad joke yeah .

Speaker 2

No , that wasn't dad joke . It sure sounded like one . That was just the truth . Okay , anywho , oh ow , it hit me hard . Catch any of the football games .

Speaker 3

Yes . Thursday , Friday night game I did catch Thursday night's game Because I like either one of the teams .

Speaker 2

Football season started .

Speaker 3

I like to see one of those teams get beat real bad . I won't say a name or anything .

Speaker 2

But well , I'm gonna take a taylor swift's boyfriend's team .

Speaker 3

Yes , that you're a denver fan , so I was very upset that they allowed the kansas city players to be off the line so much , but every time oh , no , no , no , no , no , it's okay , it's Kansas City . Oh , that's the way they're going to play it this year again . Okay , well , folks , I can save you 16 weeks of agony of watching your team . Kansas City is probably going to win the Super Bowl this year , because that's what it's called now .

Speaker 2

All right , well , now we know football season is over . Thanks , tom .

Speaker 3

I'm sorry , spoiler alert . No , Denver's going to be stepping in the way , I think .

Speaker 2

I will say one thing about Kansas City their defense looks for real . They look good . They did Actually both defenses look pretty damn good yeah they did actually . How about the Philly-Green Bay game ?

Speaker 3

in Brazil .

Speaker 2

I caught about a quarter of that game . I actually watched that whole game . I didn't fall asleep on that one .

Speaker 3

Well , I had my grandson over , so we were kind of doing things back and forth .

Speaker 2

Right , he's not interested in football yet .

Speaker 3

Not yet . He's still into video games .

Speaker 2

What are you doing wrong as a ?

Speaker 3

grandparent , only getting him on the weekends . What do you do ? That's the problem . Yeah , well , he did bring his bow and arrow over today , so we're gonna get out and shoot a little this afternoon . That sounds fun yeah , yeah , he's excited will he be shooting at you ? We'll probably go over some rules before we start that's a good idea .

Speaker 2

He won't listen , but we'll probably go over some Back to our days with lawn jarts .

Speaker 3

Right .

Speaker 2

Remember the old lawn jarts .

Speaker 3

Lawn darts . I loved lawn darts .

Speaker 2

They were lawn jarts .

Speaker 3

Oh jarts , that's what they called them .

Speaker 2

I don't know why . All it has is big pointy things .

Speaker 3

Because they look like a jet .

Speaker 2

I'm going to throw this up in the air .

Speaker 3

It was between a jet and a dart . Yeah , that's true , I'm going to throw this up in the air .

Speaker 2

Everybody scatter . Who will it hit ? Or you stay there , let me throw it up .

Speaker 3

And see how close it comes without you moving .

Speaker 2

You're not moving enough . You told me not to move .

Speaker 3

Classic childhood games Red Rover . Remember that we were talking about the other day .

Speaker 2

They have rock plates .

Speaker 3

I got hit right in the center of the forehead with a dirt clawed one time .

Speaker 2

I got hit with cow patties .

Speaker 3

Well , we did play cow patty football .

Speaker 2

That's not fun .

Speaker 3

Well , you'll wait until they dry , idiot .

Speaker 2

Oh , okay , that sounds a little better .

Speaker 3

See , it gets better . If you don't get one , that's kind of hard on the outside and mushy on the inside .

Speaker 2

That's the ones I like to throw at people See , there you go . I'm evil like that , what can I say ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , but I got to notice the last couple of times we've done music I've really enjoyed the different genres and stuff that we're learning .

Speaker 2

Oh , yeah , both learning new bands . You have bands I've never really listened to . Right , I've got you into some bands that you don't listen to or never heard of .

Speaker 3

Right , you know we do know music , but do we really really know music , like the business end of it and what these artists go through day in ?

Speaker 2

and day out . That's why we've done our homework and with the chit-chat we've had the thing I wanted to talk about . We were discussing outside earlier . We were asking the question how do musicians from 30 years ago , how do musicians differ from getting paid now ? Because it sounds like a struggle a lot of times . Oh yeah , you know , things are different . You get streaming , yeah . So I printed out some information that seems very informative and it pretty much answers our questions . So the first one I want to read . First of all , it says the music industry has undergone huge transformations over the last 30 years , reshaping how musicians make a living . And here's a breakdown Streaming services Right Now . If you remember back in early I want to say 2000, . You remember Napster ?

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Remember all that Free downloads , true , and Lars Ulrich and Metallica get involved and other bands that shut it down Because , it's true , they're giving their music away for free . I think LimeWire was another one LimeWire , oh yeah . So you know , at first I was pissed off , but it's like well , I already bought that album , why do I have to pay for that song again ? But I totally get it . You can't . There's no way to control who has what right . Well , anyways , I found out this very important information 2018 you know what donald trump did ?

Speaker 2

yeah , and I remember and I just had to look it up again to make sure I was right he signed the music modernization act into law on October 11 , 2018 . The legislation was aimed at updating copyright laws for digital age , particularly benefiting songwriters , producers and musicians . The MMA introduced several key changes , not to be confused with mixed martial arts . Right right right Higher royalties for songwriters . For songwriters , the law established a fair process for determining the royalty rates that streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music pay to songwriters , which led to higher payouts . Next , number two creation of the mechanical licensing collective . The new body manages blanket licenses for digital services , ensuring songwriters and publishers get their new royalties more efficiently . Number three protections for legacy artists . The law ensured that the artist whose music was recorded before 1972 could finally receive royalties for their work when it's played on digital platforms . Overall , the MMA has seen a significant win for musicians , producers and songwriters , so that means you can get your royalties for those songs you wrote , tom .

Speaker 3

Yeah , and what also ?

Speaker 2

that means you can get your royalties for those songs you wrote Tom yeah , and what also that means Before 1972 .

Speaker 3

Yeah , yeah , that also means that when we're brainstorming out on the porch or on break and what was that song , smokey Robinson ? And every time we download that to prove each other who it was or what it was , they should get a royalty for that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , they do . That's what they do now . Right , exactly that's what the problem was .

Speaker 3

Yeah , they didn't used to , and crooked people who were managing these bands were taking advantage of them . And people still are taking advantage of some of these .

Speaker 2

I don't mean when I say lowly artists , I mean artists that aren't that big . I don't mean they suck . That's not what I mean .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

People starting out , people in the mid part of it . What sucks is you go to a concert ? They ask you know , they give you an invite . Well , you get there , they pay you whatever .

Speaker 3

This is it .

Speaker 2

But now they want a piece of your merchandise Right , which I think is bullshit . Well , we have this auditorium . You're selling concessions , you're selling all this . You're selling tickets . You're making your money .

Speaker 3

I'm drawing you business , right , I am drawing . Yeah , you're giving me a place , but I rented this place , right , basically ? And I am going to draw you a crowd and pay you to do so . Don't take any more of my money , right exactly .

Speaker 2

You know it's bullshit , uh , that's why a lot of them now it's a direct to fan platforms , a lot of bands doing it . So I did a little research because band camp I've always heard that name helping out artists doing this and that well , there's something that one time just a band camp . We're not going to go down that road .

Speaker 3

Oh , okay .

Speaker 2

Anyways , as I was bringing up Bandcamp , one of the places where these artists love to go , there's been some complaints .

Speaker 3

Oh , complaints about Bandcamp .

Speaker 2

Not that Bandcamp . Let's not go down that road . I told you that . But anyways they're a platform where , like us with our podcast podcast we have a platform that you reuse to get help with all this . All right , so bank , yeah , fees and revenue cuts . While bandcamp is known for allowing artists to keep a larger share of sales compared to other platforms , they still take around 10 to 50 percent cut from digital sales , which can feel significant , especially for smaller independent artists trying to maximize income . True , right payout delays .

Speaker 2

Some artists have reported delays of receiving payments , which can be frustrating for those relying on band camp as a primary income stream , particularly around popular band camp fridays , when artists get 100 of sales . So they give them one day . They do get a good platform visibility . It promotes Indie Art at easy .

Speaker 3

I'm just wondering the one day is that because they give Suzy Inn and Accounting a ?

Speaker 2

day off . They probably say we don't sell anything that day , sorry .

Speaker 3

We're not doing nothing that day . Susie in accounting is off .

Speaker 2

Wait a minute . We'll give you 100% of the proceeds . Let's see what was that . Where was that here ? Okay Platform makes it difficult for new or lesser known artists to stand out Without built-in algorithms pushing music to potential fans like Spotify or YouTube , which they don't do . Artists are off the field . They have to do all the promotions themselves . User experience and interface . Some have complained about Bandcamp's website being outdated or clunky . Both artists and fans have mentioned that it could use an upgrade in terms of ease . Basically , they're not really doing what they should be doing .

Speaker 3

Exactly .

Speaker 2

So there's another one , Patreon . You've heard of Patreon , Patreon , yeah , so I wanted to do see what the difference was between the two . Of course , Bandcamp and Patreon are both platforms that help artists monetize their work , but they operate in different ways and serve different purposes . Bandcamp their focus , is primarily for musicians their business model . Artists sell music their business model . Artist sells music , merchandise and digital content directly to fans . Revenue Artists get a percentage of each sale , With Bandcamp taking a small cut , typically 10-15% , which we already talked about One-time purchases .

Speaker 2

Fans buy albums , songs or merch one time . Community Fan engagement is based on purchases . There's no limited subscription model . Discoverability it's a platform where users discover and support new independent artists . Now here's Patreon . Focus for a wide variety of creators musicians , podcasters , writers , youtubers , etc . Okay , their business model is subscription-based . Fans , called patrons , pledge a monthly amount to support creators . We know about that Revenue . Patreon takes 5 to 12% of what creators earn , depending on the plan , a little less , but they give ongoing support . Patrons subscribe to creators in exchange for perks such as exclusive content , early access , behind-the-scenes materials , etc . Which we hope to do one day . So a little difference . Patreon sounds like what you get is what you're going to get . Bandcamp not so much , which kind of screws the artist over .

Speaker 3

So my next thing was about because we mentioned merchandise- See , it is kind of like that road we were going to go down .

Speaker 2

Yeah , kind of , I guess , tom , you're getting it . Yeah , you're going to get it if you go there with them .

Speaker 2

So with merchandise , again we bitched . I complained about why that is . It says concert promoters often ask for a percentage of a band's merchandise sales , referred to as merch cut , for several reasons . Venue revenue stream Many venues rely on multiple revenue sources to stay profitable , not just ticket sales . The merch percentage helps the venue or promoter cover their costs , including staffing , security , utilities and maintenance . If you're going to hire me to do a gig , shouldn't you have all this shit lined up anyways before you want more ? Alright , now , of course .

Speaker 3

Why shouldn't I just bring my own ?

Speaker 2

Yeah right , these guys . I got these gorillas here who are going to help me out .

Speaker 3

Never mind this guy . I've known him since the sixth grade .

Speaker 2

You're in trouble if you cross him , Then we get increased costs . No-transcript . But by the nomics of work it's so good so that helps .

Speaker 3

Yeah , sure , yeah , unexpected tax .

Speaker 2

Concerts involve significant logistical expenses such as sound lighting , marketing and operations . Promoters or venues see merch cuts as a way to offset these costs . Let's steal from the little guy , but we'll get to that Standard practice . In many cases , especially with larger venues , taking a percentage of merch sales has become a standard practice . Venues argue that they are providing the space , infrastructure and traffic for bands to sell merchandise and believe they are entitled to a portion of those sales . Risk mitigation Promoters take financial risk in organizing events , including booking the artists , marketing the event and covering upfront costs . Booking the artist , marketing the event and covering up front costs . Asking for a cut of the merch helps them mitigate potential losses .

Speaker 2

If ticket sales don't fully cover expenses , the practice can be controversial

Independent Music Industry Trends

Speaker 2

. This is where I get it , especially for smaller independent bands who often rely heavily on merch sales to make a profit . Some bands negotiate lower percentages or refuse the venues that demand a cut , and I get that . See , if you're a small . The venues that demand a cut , and I get that . See , if you're a small . I guess that's my problem . You're a smaller and these are the bands I heard about before . Smaller , just starting out , trying to get your name out there , son of a bitch , you'll take my last dime . Sometimes they pay these festivals and they'll let you in , but we're not paying you . But to them it's 20 minutes , a half hour of time to get in front of people . We'll take it All right , but now we want some of your merch .

Speaker 3

What .

Speaker 2

What ? Yeah , I'm playing your stupid thing for free .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

It kind of pisses me off . There I'm bringing you people I'm going to get into reading more of this shit .

Speaker 3

But you know , you guys get into this . I mean , start doing some research and know what you're supporting when you're buying these albums and what's hurting you . Or , more importantly , what you're doing to a band when you download one of their songs on some other platform . Oh , I got it for free .

Speaker 2

You really couldn't spend the $1.49 , the 99 cents , the $2.00 , whatever it is for a stupid song that you like .

Speaker 3

That you probably have stored away on an album back in a box somewhere Anyway go get it out and buy it . The record players . They're there and I mean , by the way , I want one yeah well , now they have Bluetooth too , so that's pretty awesome . Yeah , well , I want one .

Speaker 2

So , anyways , I wanted to bring up the difference between now as we end this little segment here . Right , I was more talking about musical stuff , but that's for another segment . Wait a minute , wait a minute , ain't that on the no , no , no , no , no , no no . Oh , that's different .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's different .

Speaker 3

Oh .

Speaker 2

Let's not mention that .

Speaker 3

Okay , oh , that's different , that's different .

Speaker 2

Oh , let's not mention that , okay . Star of the show . Oh , okay , we won't go there . A rising star in indie rock , soccer Mummy , aka Sophie Allison See , I still think we're okay , we won't go there Makes lo-fi production with introspective and often alcoholic lyrics .

Speaker 3

See , I swear it's her .

Speaker 2

No , no , she doesn't say that at all , man , I'm just making that up . Oh jesus . Her sound resonates with a growing crowd of indian alt-rock bands . No , these artists have found success through a mix of authentic storytelling , distinctive styles , grassroots efforts , often leveraging them platforms like bandcamp to engage directly with their fans . I can tell you , cause I know so much about him right now the warning did not use bank . No , I heard an interesting tidbit on how it all started with warning . I want to get this out quick . Remember how the sand man kind of put them up there right .

Speaker 2

But made him go viral . That supposedly was supposed to be emailed to their grandparents . Okay , it was too big to go email to their grandparents , so they put it on YouTube . Went on vacation so their parents could watch it on YouTube . Their grandparents Came back and the thing's gone viral , Wow . So if it ever went through the email and they never put it on YouTube , I always wonder what if ? What would have happened ? Sure , they're talented , they would have made it eventually . But anyways , that's our little music information for today , and I'll throw my little two cents right there .

Speaker 2

I would love to hear your little two cents .

Speaker 3

Everybody . A lot of folks worry about how come they pray before they do . They're very family oriented and I think that they're blessed . That's why that they're blessed .

Speaker 2

That's why that they are blessed .

Speaker 3

That's why it was opened up .

Speaker 2

That's why they're so . Because they pray before , because they're in touch with the spiritual side of it , and it's there's something spiritual about music that just it's different when you have a tight family like that . It really is . You know , and let's be honest , and I know this from experience Spanish people make . They're very family oriented , absolutely Very family . I mean , we see that I don't mean it's a rude way , but then it's 10 , 12 of them in a freaking house , man .

Speaker 3

Yeah , they love each other , they take care of their own though , yes thing .

Speaker 2

And before I ended , again , those independent artists I just talked about . We made fun of some of the names , but check them out , give them some love , give all of them some love . They're out there doing stuff , making , you know , making their own way , not using any big time record . There's a reason they call them independent they pay for everything they pay for all of their stuff I may have hacked some of their names , but definitely sound like interesting artists and of course , I'm always in the back of the morning .

Speaker 3

How can you hack Bad Bunny ?

Speaker 2

I don't know .

Speaker 3

Yeah , there you go . I'm thinking about looking them up . They sound interesting .

Speaker 2

Very interesting .

Chicken Little and the Bear Poke

Speaker 2

Is it time for the little ones ? I believe it is . Oh boy , I can't wait , I'm going to go take a leak anyway , so I don't even want to hear what they have to say .

Speaker 3

Yeah , there you go .

Speaker 2

We'll be back in a bit folks .

Speaker 3

Yeah , maybe .

Speaker 4

Oh , wow , wow , buddy . What's going on ? Oh , not a whole lot . What is going on ? I'm still in a fantastic mood . Okay , well , good for you .

Speaker 4

Well , that was a great story on all that music , shit that I don't understand . Yeah well , you don't understand a lot of stuff . What are you talking about ? I understand plenty . Okay , yeah , you know what your problem is . You always think the sky's falling . You're very negative . Yeah well , you're like Chicken Little . Yeah well , keep bringing up negative shit . I'm happy .

Speaker 4

There was a good story , so why would you bring up something stupid like Chicken Little ? Oh , I'm just talking , you're negative like the sky's falling , just like that stupid chicken . No , the sky falling isn't the whole story about that stupid thing . Well , the sky never fell Exactly , so why'd they make a big damn deal about it ? It's a children's book Children , yeah , okay . Well , let's teach children how to section people out . Okay , okay Well , chicken Little was probably the poor kid in the class .

Speaker 4

Why ? Well , because he's the only one that didn't have a damn matching name Ducky , lucky , goosey , loosey , fopsy , lopsy . Wait a minute , chicken Little , how you poor , you don't get a matching name . That's sad . What the hell's happy about that ? I don't think that's the way the story is , I think he he sticks out , yeah , like a sore thumb , like a poor kid in a classroom . Ducky lucky's not run around and say the sky's falling , he's going to grow up to live in a trailer park and have a whole two-pound set of keys on a chain and talk about it . Well , will a reporter ask him if he saw it ? Yeah , he'd think it all . Right , he's sad , it's terrible . Why is he sad ? Well , okay , we have a children's book , one of the most popular books in the whole world . Okay , I'll go with that with you . Okay , we have For kids , ducky Lucky . Oh , yeah , we have Goosey Loosey .

Speaker 4

All right , we have Foxy Loxy , yeah . Why don't we have Chicken Licking no , no , no See . Why don't we have chicken licking no , no , no See . Then somebody would be eating him . No , no , no , like chicken licking good . Okay , that's finger licking good , and that was some dude in Kentucky . Yeah , I know , but you've got to confuse it . People would confuse it Not really , because when Kentucky people hear it they'll think it's squirrel . Ah , finger licking good . Kentucky fried's squirrel , finger licking good , kentucky Fried Tree Squirrel , okay , tree Chicken , anyway .

Speaker 4

Okay , I'm just , I'm appalled that this makes you happy . It even pisses me off more . That's not what made me happy . I grew up as a poor kid . The story made me happy , not that story . I just said you sounded like Chicken Little , I do . Yeah , you're negative . Well , maybe that's because I was Chicken Little . I was the poor kid . Ah , yeah , ha , ha , there it is , yep , there it is . That nerve , yeah , wow , touch the bear where you hurt , said the therapist . So they made the story about your sorry ass . Well , that's how it sounds Happier . See , that's funny as hell . Okay , where's that damn toy with that helicopter ? I'm ready to go . You're like a star , yeah , a star Shooting star . Make a wish , damn it . I'm telling you Shooting star Make a wish , damn it . I'm telling you one thing what Chicken little ? Okay , first off , a foxy loxy would have done eight Goosey Lucy , and the whole thing wouldn't have been a children's program then . Well , why would foxy loxy eat Goosey Lucy ?

Speaker 1

We're talking real shit here . I said Goosey Lucy .

Speaker 4

Yeah , well , she probably was . But it was Goosey Lucy . Yeah , well , she was . Why was she like that ? Well , because Foxy Loxy played , and then Ducky got lucky . And see , I told you it's the same thing , and you said no , it's not that we're rated R , not X . No , it's not that we're rated R , not X . Well , turns out Chicken Little . Yeah , he reminds me of the boy that cried wolf , same thing , why , well , how's that ? The same thing ? Because he kept saying wolf , wolf . There was no wolf , okay , so he's a liar . Oh , this guy's fallen . This guy never fell . Yeah , chicken Little , see where I'm getting at . Yeah , chicken Little , see where I'm getting at . Yeah , chicken Little's a liar . So both of them are yeah , okay . So , except the stupid boy at the end cried wolf . It really was one and no one helped him and he got eight .

Speaker 4

Well he's an idiot . Yeah , well see , you play stupid games . You win stupid prizes . That doesn't sound like a good prize at all . That's why it's a stupid prize . Yeah , well see , now you're figuring your own shit out . Wow , that's pretty good . So what do you need me for ? I'm out of here . Wow , I guess we really don't Well , exactly , bye , bye . See ya , I'm out of here . Alrighty , later , yeah , goosey loosey , later Bye , baby , goosey loosey , later Bye .

Speaker 2

Baby . Well , that was quite interesting , short but sweet , interesting .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I think for once we pissed the little guy off worse than he was .

Speaker 2

Chicken Little bothers him that much .

Speaker 3

Well , I think it hit a nerve because he felt a little left out of place , like Chicken Little was supposed to feel . Wow .

Speaker 2

Oh well .

Speaker 3

He took offense to a children's story the other guy found it amusing . Yeah , he does . He finds everything . Anytime the other guy's pissed off , the other guy finds it amusing .

Speaker 2

Seems to find humor in it .

Speaker 3

Yeah , he loves it . I think he pokes the bear .

Speaker 2

Nothing wrong with poking the bear .

Speaker 3

Oh , every once in a while you have to poke the bear .

Speaker 2

You just have to be careful for the retaliation Don't let the bear get the stick . No , no , no , Anyway . So football tomorrow , buddy .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I'm ready .

Speaker 2

Our games finally . Yeah finally , games that matter to us .

Speaker 3

Yeah , we're going to see if they matter to us .

Speaker 2

I noticed the points per in the Pats game went down though the seven instead of nine and a half .

Speaker 3

Well , that's because they're actually thinking about showing up .

Speaker 2

Cincinnati's going to smoke them .

Speaker 3

I don't know .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I'm pretty sure it's going to happen , but hey , I'll watch them . I was a Pats fan since 1969 , 1970 .

Speaker 3

77 for me and the Broncos .

Speaker 2

I still don't understand how you became a Broncos fan living in the cornfields of Kansas . Well , I was closer Even when you moved here .

Speaker 3

I was closer to Denver growing up than I was to Kansas City .

Speaker 2

Oh , so you were west .

Speaker 3

So I was very west Northwest corner . I was okay , let me put it this way , it was a 45-minute drive to the Colorado State line . Shit , let me put it this way , it was a 45 minute drive to the Colorado State line .

Speaker 2

Shit . Yeah , you were close .

Speaker 3

I was 8 and a half hours from Kansas City .

Speaker 2

Now , how far were you from Denver ?

Speaker 3

About 3 and a half hours maybe .

Speaker 2

Okay , yeah , a little bit of a ride .

Speaker 3

Yeah , still 3 . 3 and a half hours .

Speaker 2

Better than the 8 .

Speaker 3

eight . Yeah , and you should be very careful when you stop at uh the stop , the rest stops there moms between denver and kansas is it why ? I remember being there all night one time .

Speaker 2

Well , I don't really what's wrong with the diner ?

Speaker 3

I remember not the diner . I'm talking about roadside stops .

Speaker 2

Like what .

Speaker 3

Like a roadside rest area .

Speaker 2

Oh , where all the pee-pee touches are .

Speaker 3

Well , they didn't used to be .

Speaker 2

They just used to like .

Speaker 3

Back in the day it was safe to do weird shit and pass out all through .

Speaker 2

Well , I can tell you right now , there were certain ones up north where all the little butt buddies would go and meet up .

Speaker 3

No , no , no .

Speaker 2

I'm telling you they had to close those down .

Speaker 3

I would say yeah , butt buddies . Yeah , go .

Speaker 2

Nothing against your butt buddies being all fun .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that gives rest area a new meaning .

Speaker 2

You have your vehicle . Do you have to go to a rest area when families have to pee and people see you ? That's the thing .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well .

Speaker 3

So that's where my dog learned to hump my leg Exactly .

Speaker 2

Thank you , play my butt buddy . Yeah , anyways , another good session . Speaker 3

somebody once said that tragedy is a growing thing .

Speaker 2

A growing thing .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it helps you grow .

Speaker 2

Helps me grow ? To what ?

Speaker 3

As a person .

Speaker 2

Like a flower .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Like a tree .

Speaker 3

Yeah , like a butterfly flapping its wings in China .

Speaker 2

Oh , it can be free .

Speaker 3

That causes a tsunami in wherever the lake is .

Speaker 2

Butterfly effect . I saw that movie I did too . It's pretty freak .

Mike and Tom will allegedly be back next week , assuming they don't get lost in their deep philosophical thoughts about I don't know what breakfast cereal best represents modern politics . Until then , do something productive or just continue scrolling aimlessly through your phone . We both know how this is going to end Good night or good day . Time's a construct . Anyway , we'll see you next time .
