Neon lights. Big hair. Bigger hooks. We crank the dial back to 1983 and trace how a single year rewired music, movies, TV, sports, and even what we wore on our wrists. From Michael Jackson’s chart dominance and Madonna’s arrival to Prince’s sleek menace and The Police at full polish, we pull on the threads that MTV stitched into identity. Metal slammed through the door with Quiet Riot and Dio, New Order and The Cure made synths feel human, and Run‑DMC and Grandmaster Flash gave hip hop its next gear. Southern rock kept the amps warm, proving that heartland riffs could coexist with neon beats.
Screens were just as loud. Return of the Jedi closed a chapter, Scarface redefined swagger and consequence, National Lampoon’s Vacation made family chaos cinematic, and WarGames turned arcade smarts into world‑ending stakes. The MASH finale became a collective goodbye, The A‑Team taught us to love duct‑tape ingenuity, and Fraggle Rock snuck weirdness onto HBO. In arcades, Dragon’s Lair looked like the future while the market crashed around it; at home, Japan’s Famicom quietly set up the NES to rescue gaming later. Even Swatch watches and Chicken McNuggets joined the culture shift, proof that style and snacks can be moments, too.
Sports brought the mythmaking. Washington rode John Riggins to a title, Philadelphia went almost “fo’, fo’, fo’,” and the Islanders held off Gretzky’s Oilers one last time. College hoops delivered NC State’s miracle finish. And the 1983 NFL draft launched a generation—Elway, Marino, Kelly—while we revisit how the Patriots and Broncos actually fared that season. Along the way we compare then vs now toughness, share porch‑side memories, and connect why 1983 still shapes today’s playlists, highlight reels, and timelines.
Hit play, take the ride, and then tell us your definitive 1983 pick—song, movie, game, or game-winning moment. If you enjoyed this throwback, follow, share with a friend, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find the show.

Porch Banter And Setup
SPEAKER_00Well, hello there, weary listeners, and welcome once again to the MT Alternative Podcast, the show where structure goes to die and common sense taps out after the first five minutes. This week, Mike and Tom will be attempting, and I emphasize attempting, to cover music from the year 1983. Yes, the year when MTV was actually playing music videos. Men were wearing mesh shirts unironically, and somehow everyone collectively decided that synthesizers should be in everything. They'll also be discussing other cultural notables from 83, and inevitably, veering completely off course into bewildering side conversations about snacks, football, and that time Tom hitchhike to Kansas. Don't worry, he'll bring it up. He always does. So buckle up, or don't, it won't help. Pour yourself a drink, take a deep breath, and let's once again pretend there's a plan here. This is the MT Alternative Podcast. God help us all.
SPEAKER_02Roll down the windows and crank up those boom bones. MT Alternative Podcast, let's drive Mike and Tom. We're still rocking live.
SPEAKER_05Welcome back to MT Alternative Podcast on the porch. Once again, Tom, what's going on, bud?
SPEAKER_04Oh, a beautiful day out here on the porch, Mike. What's up with you?
SPEAKER_05It is a gorgeous day. No uh no wind? No, there is no wind as to speak of. Temperature's fine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Mid-60s, maybe.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that sounds about right. Yeah. Or a guesstimate. Maybe you should be that person that said feels like in the weather.
SPEAKER_04Feels like.
SPEAKER_05You might be missing your calling there, Tom.
SPEAKER_04It feels like 60 something.
SPEAKER_0560 something? Be more specific.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Feels like 60 something or other.
SPEAKER_05Okay, that works. 60 something or other. So, anyways, what's going on, man?
SPEAKER_04Oh, not too much. Just uh enjoying a Saturday and no work today. That was sweet.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's awesome.
SPEAKER_04Needed the rest.
SPEAKER_05Definitely needed the rest.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I woke up at the crack of dawn. Anyway.
SPEAKER_05Oh, strange thing is with me, I was up till I probably didn't fall asleep till a little after three last night. Wow. Yep. I was up by seven, quarter past seven.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Time change is getting us.
SPEAKER_05I do like this time change. I like the standard time. This is what I like. I wish it would stay this way. To me, this is this is awesome.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because I feel like I want to just lay down and go to sleep about 5 30, 6 o'clock.
SPEAKER_05Nothing wrong with that. Nope. Get a little extra sleep, it feels like. Heck yeah. I'm gonna admit, I feel more rested. Yeah. But again, it was nice not to work today.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was. It was. And we got some stuff going on there at the house. Some we're getting our deck kind of fixed, and it's coming along really well and finally. Yeah. While they're fixing our deck, they're decided to put a uh a little tool shed and casement there.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, so we're getting place to put our tools and stuff on the back porch now.
SPEAKER_05Not a lot of tools, do you?
SPEAKER_04Uh not none to speak of.
SPEAKER_05Just a couple rakes and whatnot.
SPEAKER_04I'm hoping shovels, rapes. I'm hoping that my lawnmower will fit in there. So it's 48 by I don't know, nine feet, ten feet deep. But it's forty-eight. It's four feet wide.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04So I can put my lawnmower in there.
SPEAKER_05Should be able to put your lawnmower in there, right? Yeah. And then of course. My rider would not fit in that. Nope. Nope.
SPEAKER_04Nope. I don't want a rider. I just I got a little bit of yard. I don't have too much yard. Most of mine are trees.
SPEAKER_05I'm old, so a rider's nice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's it's nice.
SPEAKER_05Not gonna lie. You know what's funny? Mowing the lawn, mowing the lawn. I said, I need a rider, it'd be great. Got the rider, was excellent. Even now I bitch. I gotta mow the lawn. I know it's like. What are you doing? You're sitting down, you stupid fat ass. Good lord. You're riding on it. You're driving around. You know what I found out helps? What? Mowing the lawn? Chocolate. Oh yeah. I then you just got a big grin on your face. Mowing the lawn, you just want to mow the whole neighborhood.
SPEAKER_04That chocolate is a good thing to do about any time. You want to mow it. The vacuum lawn. You can be cleaning the damn bathroom, and this makes it much better.
SPEAKER_05Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Exactly.
SPEAKER_05Chocolate. Yeah, chocolate. So, anyways, uh, we're gonna be getting on moving on to
Kicking Off 1983 In Music
SPEAKER_05uh 1983. Moving on, uh huh. Of course, we'll stick to the music as our big part. Yeah, we'll go on some notables and whatever else pops up. No tibbles. Easy with the pop-up. Yeah, no tibbles. Tibbles? The old no tibbles. So let's jump into 83, Tom. All right. Jump. Oh, lo and behold, look who's on top again. Michael Jackson.
SPEAKER_04Michael.
SPEAKER_05See?
SPEAKER_04He's like got three or four on here this time.
SPEAKER_05He was released in uh 82, which we talked about last time. But still dominating 83. Good for him. Well, and MTV helped that too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, MTV did.
SPEAKER_05We had Madonna with her debut. Like a virgin. Like a virgin.
SPEAKER_04For the very first time.
SPEAKER_05Touch for the very yeah, bullshit Madonna.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Let me let me guess. By eighth grade, you had been touched more than Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Anyways, we'll move on. Uh, U2 came out with their album more. That's when I actually didn't mind YouTube. Metallica, kill them all. Yeah. Go Metallica. We had the police with synchronicity. Who tried to kill them all? Yeah, wish they could kill them all. Talking heads with their album speaking in tongues.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, I didn't understand that one.
SPEAKER_05Let's see. We had the uh Rhythmics, Sweet Dreams. Made of these. Who am I? To disagree. Step Leopard, Pyromania. And we had Cindy Lauper, She's So Unusual. David Bowie, Let's Dance. Now the major singles. Here we go. Michael Jackson, Billy Jean. Imagine that. Thanks that I am the one. Nope. Get her done, FedEx. Yeah, go ahead. Alright, we had the police with every breath you take. Nope, that's not it. Sweet Dreams are made of this. Yeah, that's one I already said. Toto, Africa. And again, another one. Late 82 release, but peaked in 83. Yep. That's the one. Men at work, overkill.
SPEAKER_04I don't I don't think I know that. Overkill.
SPEAKER_05I know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Who can't do it?
SPEAKER_05I couldn't be knocking at my door. Yeah. About culture club. Comic chameleon. Yeah, culture club. You come and go.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Well, here's the thing about that. Sure. I heard uh that there was a thing. He had this lizard one time.
SPEAKER_05He had a thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. At an airport. Okay. Bit somebody.
SPEAKER_05All right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So he came and went? Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_04Oh. No. They said that they would the the they had took it to court or something, and but but they said they'd throw it out if he got a calmer chameleon.
SPEAKER_05Are you making this up? I did. You saw it. Not just hear the end of it? Did you not get a calmer chameleon? Did I not tell you that chocolate earlier? Oh yeah. Okay. I did too. So. Alright. How about hungry like a wolf?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Duran Duran.
SPEAKER_04Hungry like the wolf. AKA. I'm hungry as a bitch wolf. Billy Joel.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Billy Joel, Uptown Girl.
SPEAKER_04Uptown girl. She's been the internet. Yeah, why don't you just say she's a snooty bitch and want nothing to do with you?
SPEAKER_05Right. Little Grease Monkey you. Alright, new order, Blue Monday. This is the new wave, synth pop stuff. The pesh mode. Everything counts. The cure. I kind of like the cure. I did like the cure. The walk, the love cats. And yeah, Yazoo. Nobody's diary. Okay. Any comments on that one? Nobody's diary. Nobody's. Here we go. RB and Funk. Prince, little red corvette.
SPEAKER_04He's got a couple in this well. Yeah, he had a few.
SPEAKER_05Yep, we got Chaka Khan, Ain't Nobody. Lionel Richie. All that lost.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he had a couple too this year.
SPEAKER_05And Rick James, cold blooded. Alright. Mike's little alley. Metal and Hard Rock. We had Quiet Riot with their debut of Metal Health. It was the first heavy metal album to hit number one in the U.S. I did not know that either. I didn't know that. Oh, there we go. Deal with Holy Diver. Great song. Great album. Title track becomes Metal Gospel, obviously. Ozzie Bark at the Moon. Yeah, that's gospel. Uh I think they said that was released late in '83. Mowed ahead, another perfect day. Yeah. All right, down Tom's Little Road. Country. Alabama. The closer you get. Yeah, the further out fall. Why are you falling?
SPEAKER_04Don't fall. I called you bastard, you bastard. Yeah, why are you calling me bastard?
SPEAKER_05Anyway. That's a s I don't like that song. Yeah, that song's. I say bastard in it. Alright, we got George Strait. Fire I can't put out. You'll always be the fire I can't put out.
SPEAKER_04Can't piss on it? Nope. She wouldn't piss on her.
SPEAKER_05Oh, it's a her. He said fire.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. She'll always be. Oh, okay. She can't put out.
SPEAKER_05How about Ann Murray? A little good news. Sure could use a little good news.
SPEAKER_04Also, Grammy winning.
SPEAKER_05Did you know that?
SPEAKER_04Nobody burned a liquor store on the other side. Or something like that.
SPEAKER_05Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's what we uh spray.
unknownI just came out.
SPEAKER_05No, let's not sing that. No one in between. Hip hop and early rap. Run DMC. It's like that. Okay, here they come. We got the races here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, here they come. Get it in.
SPEAKER_05We got Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Oh, yeah. The message. And Houdini, The Haunted House of Rock.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that disappeared.
SPEAKER_05Now, a lot of these other songs. Southern Rock was big back then, too. Yeah. We had some good Southern Rock stuff back then. We had uh Gimme Three Steps from Leonard Skinnard.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was wild.
SPEAKER_05Give me three
Singles That Ruled MTV
SPEAKER_05steps. Give me three steps, Mister. Why'd he get himself in trouble?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because it was a woman.
SPEAKER_05Why was he dancing with her?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well. Self-explanatory.
SPEAKER_05Dixie Highway? Dixie Highway. Now, you know what's funny here? Why did they call it the Lennon Skinned Tribute Bandera?
SPEAKER_04Well, everybody wanted to play.
SPEAKER_05Surviving members. Yeah. Let's see. Uh, albums and tracks actually released in '83 from Southern. We have 38 Special Tour de Force. Yeah. Great songs on that one.
SPEAKER_04I like 38 Special.
SPEAKER_05If I'd been the One. If I'd been the One.
SPEAKER_04That's one of the bands on the Where You Belong. I I'm so glad I got to see them.
SPEAKER_05Tom? This one we we were talking about earlier. Okay. One Time for Old Times. Yeah. You asked me if I remember I said, I don't, I don't even know that song. Once we played the video.
SPEAKER_04Turns out you did.
SPEAKER_05Once I saw the beginning of the video, or even before that, I said, I remember seeing, I'm hearing it, but I think it was a video on MTV, is what I remember that from. So we went and looked it up. That's what it was.
SPEAKER_04That's what it was. And I think that's a lot of our MTV. MTV made.
SPEAKER_05Everybody had MTV on back then. Like I said in the other podcast, that was our radio. And the great thing about it was you didn't care what song came out. There might have been one, maybe two, so you couldn't care less about.
SPEAKER_04But everything had a had a movie to it.
SPEAKER_05I mean, every band that most of the bands, and I'm going to say 80, 85% of the bands that I heard on there, I liked that didn't bother me. Was it maybe my genre at the time I was I'm really into rock and metal, but I it just that was that era of music where it just taste of Stryper is on MTV. Was it uh To Hell with the Devil?
SPEAKER_04It had to be. That was what it was. Uh there was and then they had the ballad. I remember the ballad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they did have a ballad. And it was But yeah, MTV. I mean, and it's true. The cultural looking at bands, people started dressing like some of these bands. Yeah, it was crazy. It was. But uh, yeah, I was just reminiscing and thinking we had uh going back to this, we had Molly Hatchet, No Gusts, No Glory. Oh, yeah. The songs on there that stuck out, What Does It Matter, Sweet Dixie, and Kinda Like Love. Blackfoot, which I we talked about last time, I like. They had Send Me an Angel off there uh album and Sail Away. The Almond Brothers. Allman Brothers, yeah, that was one of my favorites, too. Straight from the Heart and Southbound. Southbound, uh great song. Uh Southern Rock, uh adjacent hits that were huge in '83. We had Hank Williams Jr. with Wheatland Jennings, The Conversation.
SPEAKER_04Yep, that was a big, big, big hit.
SPEAKER_05Z Z Top, Sharp Dress Man. Yep, everybody's. John Mellencamp's on here. I don't know why, with Pink Houses, Alabama, Dixieland Delight. Yep. Spend my dollar. Once again, and that was last year, too, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, 82 also.
SPEAKER_05And Charlie Daniels band, Simple Man. Those are some of the notables from 83. Yep. So, you know, there's some good goods. Good stuff in '83. A lot of good stuff. Uh kind of takes you back. Let's get into some of the notables. Okay. Uh we'll get into, we'll start with World and U.S. events. Ronald Reagan delivers his evil empire speech, heightening cold war, tensions. Oh, yeah. I don't know if you remember that as much. At that age, I was twenty. Right.
SPEAKER_01So you remember that.
SPEAKER_05And you should probably remember some of that.
unknownI did.
SPEAKER_05If you check the news, I mean it was all, I mean, basically we didn't have really much to access ourselves. Yeah, we didn't.
SPEAKER_04We all we had was news at that time. Right. Newspaper. In my opinion, back then the news was kind of real. Right, right. When you had Walter Cronkite and you had people who really stood up to tell the world. Just gave the news. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And you know, I'm not to say there wasn't any bias imperation at certain places. Not gonna say, but not like today.
SPEAKER_04No. It's not money now. I mean, it wasn't money back then, it's money now.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. Um, you had Sally Ride, she became the first American woman in space aboard the Challenger. Right. Uh US invades Granada, the top of the Marxist government. Here we go. The internet gets a major boost when let's see, our panet switches to TCP IP, the foundation of modern networking. Microsoft releases MS DOS 2.0. Oh, jeez. 2.0. Swatch.
SPEAKER_04Swatch, watch. I need one of those.
SPEAKER_05Becoming a fashion. Let's change the band. Hey, here you go, Tom. Right up your alley. Food. McDonald's introduces Chicken McNuggets nationwide. Thank God. What would we do without chicken McNuggets? Is it really chicken? Yeah. Yeah. That's up for debate. Music we pretty much talked about already from then. Let's see, movies. Here we go. Return of the Jedi. Oh yeah. I was never I've been away. Wasn't really a Star Wars fanatic. Right. I I think I
Metal, Country, And Early Hip Hop
SPEAKER_05mentioned it before, watched the first Star Wars. Really was never my thing, never never got into it. Right. You?
SPEAKER_04Well, I did. I I watched them all. It's not like I ran out and bought everyone.
SPEAKER_05Did you go I mean, did you go to the movies to see it?
SPEAKER_04Or did you just wait until it was out on it?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, see me first time movies, and it was like, okay, good movie. I won't say it sucked, but it just didn't catch my interest, really. Right, right. Now, moving on to the next one. Scarface. Al Pacino. That movie. Yeah, that caught my movie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You cacarotes. Hello to my little friend. You cacarotas.
SPEAKER_05Great movie. Alright, uh, here we go, Tom. National Lampoons Vacation. The beginning of the Griswalds, Tom. Man, I could just start. The hills are alive.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, with the sound of Griswolds. We're the winners of the Pig and the Pope. Freaking excellent movie. The Pig of the Pope, John Aston. Yeah, John Aston.
SPEAKER_05That was not that movie, but it was the second one when they went to Europe.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05European vacation.
SPEAKER_04Second or third.
SPEAKER_05Was it the second? I thought it was European vacation.
SPEAKER_04It probably was. They had vacation, then they had European vacation. Christmas, right? And then the Christmas.
SPEAKER_05And then they had I can forget what I can't.
SPEAKER_04Who cares? They're all great. I like the Christmas one too. That's a great one.
SPEAKER_05Risky Business? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Risky Business. Yeah, that was. Yeah, well.
SPEAKER_05Rebecca De Morey. Yeah. Wow. Come into my house. Let me make money with you. I'm only kidding. My wife.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, some other lady.
SPEAKER_05I was young then. Trading places?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I just watched that the other day. Great movie. Just watched it the other day.
SPEAKER_04Walk again. This kind of thing happens to me every day. They bet a dollar. Mortimer.
SPEAKER_05What was the other guy's name?
SPEAKER_04Mortimer. Somebody The Dukes.
SPEAKER_05Then we have War Games, Matthew Broderick. Yep. That was another good movie. Good movies in 83. Yeah. TV. MASH was at the finale was there in 1983.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we did.
SPEAKER_05And at that time became becomes the most watched TV episode in American history.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I remember that. I do.
SPEAKER_04We dressed up as people in MASH and watched the last episode at school.
SPEAKER_05Did you really?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Were you radar?
SPEAKER_04Unfortunately not.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. Oh, Klinger. What's next? Okay, moving on. The A-Team premieres. I pity the fool.
SPEAKER_04I ain't getting on no plane, fool.
SPEAKER_05Club Lane. BA. Fragle Rock debuts on HBO. Oh.
SPEAKER_04On HBO. That means they were a little bit out there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, a little bit.
SPEAKER_04Risque.
SPEAKER_05Uh He-Man and the Masters of the Universe becomes an afterschool staple.
SPEAKER_04Not for me. Not for me either. I wasn't the power.
SPEAKER_05Oh, video games released. The tender releases the uh Famicom in Japan will become NES in the US. Dragon's Lair hits arcades and shocks everyone with animated graphics. Ooh, look, animated graphics. Yeah, remember that? I'm Dragon's Lair. Oh, here's something. Galloping on a horse. The video game market crashes in the US. Atari collapses, store dumped games for pennies.
SPEAKER_04Isn't that what we said last week with?
SPEAKER_05Desert. That's what they said. Something. But uh, you know. Stupid stupid. Rubik's fucking Rubik's Coupes. I freaking hate that stupid thing.
SPEAKER_04So come on, man.
SPEAKER_05You got break cancelling spreading worldwide. But anyways, getting off of that now. Yeah, that kind of wraps up the some of our 83. 83 was I think uh now's a good time to let the little dudes in.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05They've been they've been all right. So we're gonna let they have been patient. So uh we'll see what's going on with them, and we'll be back after that, folks. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Hello, sweet buddy. What the fuck is that? What's up with you? Wow. I don't know, I just feel bull of it today. You are it go, buddy, ready to go.
Culture Shifts And 1983 Headlines
SPEAKER_03We're gonna go uh try to hash this shit out. We'll be back next time. All right, everybody. I'll tell you how it turns out when I come back. If it comes back later.
SPEAKER_05Damn. Tom, you never told me you took out a restraining order on Squeak.
SPEAKER_04Well, you know, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.
SPEAKER_05It's I mean his old lady's something different, but you know, Squeak is a little She I don't want to be mean, but uh very large. I like her. And the dogs do too, obviously.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're they're well when she eats, they eat. All the time.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'm not surprised you finally took out that uh restraining order on him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Seems to have yeah, calmed him down a little bit, but yeah, we'll see.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, hey, hopefully he learns.
SPEAKER_04I hope so.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Anyways, moving on.
SPEAKER_04Moving on.
SPEAKER_05Uh one thing I do want to bring up before we talk about other stuff from 83. Our football teams, a little different this year.
SPEAKER_04A little bit different this year.
SPEAKER_05Let's see. Uh, you guys, what, what, six, seven in a row now? We're seven in a row now. Patriots will play. As of right now. We got a tough. Yeah, you're number one.
SPEAKER_04We are the top seed in the right now. And as of right now, we have the best record in the NFL.
SPEAKER_05On a 13 to 10 win game.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_04We're so excited.
SPEAKER_05That Thursday night game was a snoozer.
SPEAKER_04Oh, and hear this. I read on our page somewhere that they're saying Sean Payton deliberately barely lost this game.
SPEAKER_05Why?
Movies, TV, And Video Games Of 1983
SPEAKER_04To make Kansas City feel comfortable about coming to Denver next week.
SPEAKER_05I remember when the Patriots stupid media say stupid shit like that. Stupid shit. Oh, this is the plan.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we're okay. What coach that gets paid hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars decides we're gonna try to lose.
SPEAKER_05Gotta admit, though, your fourth quarter games are basically folks don't watch the secret game until the fourth quarter.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because that's when all the happenings go on. But uh we didn't get a first down until almost the second half the last week.
SPEAKER_05It's not looking, I've got to admit, being a big Patriots fan, it's not looking good for Sunday, though. Tampa Bay. Yeah, they are hot right now. Maybe it'll be a shootout of a game. Yeah, I hope so. You know, we'll see what happens there.
SPEAKER_04Hope so. For my son's uh sake, I hope they beat him. I hope you beat Tampa. Oh, right, yeah, yeah. My son's a con fan. So yeah, he Tampa Bay loss would do him good. That that would help. Yeah, because they're not doing terrible this year. I mean, speaking of ones from last year to this year, I mean, he they they're right there. Five wins.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, hey, I'm just happy. I'm just happy we won six game what six games in a row right now. I'm happy about it. Yeah, it looks good. But anyways. So uh I want to go over some uh notable from sports from 1983, Tom. Right. So of course I'm we're gonna start with football. Oh, yeah. Uh biggest thing I know of. Super Bowl 27, January of 83, Washington Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17. Right. Uh notable from that running back, John Riggins, was named Super Bowl MVP for his famous 43-yard touchdown run on fourth down. Oh. John Riggins was a big boy. Great running back.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he was.
SPEAKER_05Let's see, the NFL draft. Here you go. 198 draft. They considered one of the greatest QB drafts classes ever. Yep. John Elway.
SPEAKER_04Joe Montana.
SPEAKER_05First overall. Broncos via his Colts drama, refused to play for the Colts. Yeah, Johnny didn't want to do that. That's like a Eli Manny didn't want to play for the Chargers and ended up going to the Giants. But, anyways, Dan Marino, another quarterback in that class, could Jim Kelly. Ken O'Brien, who played for the Jets. Yep. Tony Skirt Eason, played for the Patriots. Frickin', I hated him. And Todd Blackledge.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So those were that was a big quarterback class, it really was. Big quarterback class. Uh moving on to baseball. The Orioles won the 1983 World Series, beating the Phillies 4-1, 4 games to 1. Eddie Murphy had a big series. Rick Dempsey was named MVP. This was the final season for Kia Skremski for the Red Sox, I think his 23-year career. Kyle Skremski was a big name for us Boston fans growing up.
SPEAKER_04Gotcha.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_04I'm not big in baseball.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, I was, you know, we Kansas. What do you really have for a team there in Kansas?
SPEAKER_04The Royals.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. How far away from you? Aren't they more towards Missouri?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they're probably towards Missouri.
SPEAKER_05There you go. So, all right.
SPEAKER_04The Diamondbacks are pretty close.
SPEAKER_05All right. Basketball. Uh NCAA uh NCAA men's basketball saw one of the most legendary upsets ever. North Carolina State, coached by Jim Balbano, upset Houston's Phil Slammer Jammer, led by Hakeem Ajawan and Clyde Drexler to win the national title. The final dunk at the buzzer, and Bobano's running around the court became iconic. So you remember? I don't really remember that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, college basketball is more my. I know. That's why I'm asking.
SPEAKER_05The NBA finals, Philadelphia 76ers swept the LA Lakers of the championship. Moses Malone's predicted faux, faux, faux win in four games each round, and he almost did it. They only lost one playoff game. Let's see. Hockey. New York Islanders win their fourth straight Stanley Cup, beating the Edmonton Oilers. Poor Canada. Can't win their own game. Nope. Let's see. Oh yeah, Wayne Greske. The Oilers were rising with Wayne Greske, but the Isles dynasty was still on top. This was the last cup for the Islanders. The Oilers would take over soon. Boxing, Marvin Hagler.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Marvin Hagler.
SPEAKER_05Marvelin. Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Yes. Larry Holmes. Leroy. Another one? Tennis. Who cares? John Mackinac. Martini Navital. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, NASCAR championship. Bobby Allison wins the 1983 Winston Cup. When it was the Winston Cup.
SPEAKER_04The Winston Cup. Oh, can't say that now. Nope. Kids will get nicotine.
SPEAKER_05Nicotine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Soccer? Yeah. There's a reason it's called nicotine, y'all. Nicotine is not good for you. Okay. Oh, oh, here we go. The USFL. Oh. Future NFL stars who played in the USFL included Jim Kelly. Jim Kelly. Steve Young and I didn't know Reggie White. Steve Young and Jim Kelly are too. I did not realize Reggie White.
SPEAKER_04I did not either.
SPEAKER_05See, we learned something too, folks. There you go. We learned shit too. And I like to get into the uh go back to 83 and see how the Patriots and Denver Broncos did. Okay. I did pretty well, I think. All right. Uh New England Patriots uh their record in 83 was eight and eight. And Coach Ramaier still uh AFC East, everybody knows that. 1983 was a step forward for the Patriots after a rough early 80s stretch. This season showed signs of life, especially on offense. They stayed competitive but lacked consistency to make a playoff push. Key notes Steve Grogan and Tony Easton both saw time at quarterback. Steve Grogan. Steve Grogan was the man. Tony Easton was not. Tony Easton was a 15th overall pick in the 83 draft. Yes, the famous quarterback draft. Part of the same? Yep. John Elwick, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly. And we chose him. Craig James and Tony Collins, great, great running backs. Gave the team a respectable running presence. The defense was improving, but still inconsistent, especially late in games. They hung around a 500 all season. Preview of better years midseason. Let's see. Standout players. Tony, I wouldn't say Tony Easton was a standout player, but whatever. Steve Grogan, always loved that quarterback, Gutsy. Just a Gussie quarterback. Craig James, great running back. Part of the SMU with uh Eric Dixon. And uh Stanley Morgan, great receiver, and Andre Tippett, awesome linebacker. Now we'll go to Denver. Their record was 9-7. Dan Reeves was a coach. They lost to a wild card to Seattle Seahawks 24-7. 1983 was the year of John Elway. Even if the ride started well bumpy, Elway was drafted by the Baltimore Colts, said no thanks, engineered what is now known as the Elway trade, and arrived in Denver with a sky high expectations.
Return From Skits And Modern Football Talk
SPEAKER_05Elway split time with Oh, Steve DeBerg. I remember him. He played for Kansas City, too.
SPEAKER_04Well, he's uh in our coaching staffs now.
SPEAKER_05Oh shit. Early on, Elway struggled as a rookie at times, seven TDs, fourteen interceptions. Broncos' defense was solid and carried the team to the play. Orange crush. Yep. Denver fans now had their franchise QB, even if the season was more about growing pains and domination. Yeah, look how it turned out. Great. Yep. Alright, standout players. John Elway. Yep. Steve DeBerg. Probably a good person to learn under for John Elway. Yep. Sammy Winder. Steve Watson, receiver. Tom Jackson, who we just were talking about earlier, Tom. Yep. One of the ESPN. I wasn't sure what he was on, but it's ESPN. And uh Randy Gratishar? Yeah. Okay. Another linebacker. The Broncos and Patriots did not play each other in an 83 season. That's interesting. Yeah, it was. Oh, like going back and looking and see how our team is. No doubt. I remember that. That's kind of nice to look at now.
SPEAKER_04Randy Gratishar and all them guys. Carl Mecklenburg and the day of the hit man when you could go in there and just kill a quarterback.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. Oh yes.
SPEAKER_04Now if you brush him, you're 15 cards. Yeah. Well, no mask.
SPEAKER_05It is, hey, it's just like hockey back in the day. I still laugh when I think of these guys with no helmets. Goalies with no mask or anything. Teeth missing. It's like that was the side of hockey. Here's the thing with hockey, and it still is to this day. That's the toughest bunch of people.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We had I forgot who it was for the Bruins. I always think of this, and I forget who the name was. Playing a couple minutes of a period with a broken fibula. Skating around in the ice just to get through. And I'm like, you find out after it's like, damn, man.
SPEAKER_04Could you imagine?
SPEAKER_05Baseball. I have a hangnail. I can't play today. I think I'll be able to play basketball. Then you got something like LeBron the flopper. Ow. I'll have a big dude like that, that giant. Somebody sneezes on him and he falls over.
SPEAKER_04Ow. Ow. He hurt me.
SPEAKER_05Yep, sports aren't like they used to.
SPEAKER_04Well, everybody got a damn trophy, and that was the end of it.
SPEAKER_05But uh, another good podcast today, Bob. It was. Excellent. Excellent.
SPEAKER_04Another great day on the porch. Absolutely. Outside was just gorgeous today.
SPEAKER_05Getting a little cloudy, but it's still beautiful out. I'll take this any day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the the whole thing with, you know, this is nice now that we've got the thing with Squeak and me behind us, kinda, I think.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I hope it's behind you guys. I do hope it. I hope it is that way. But I can't hardly hope for defeating Louise anymore. Oh well. Hey, at least she's still staying on the property there. And he's up ahead. But anyway. Anyway.
SPEAKER_04Great day. Great day. And I would always like to thank God for the gift of Gab.
SPEAKER_05Folks, that'll do it. And uh everyone take care. God bless. Later.
